Innovative Electromobility Laboratory at Wroclaw University of Technology

On Tuesday, November 21, 2023, the Electromobility Laboratory was opened at the Technical University of Wroclaw. The opening ceremony gathered local authorities, the academia and enthusiasts of electromobility from Lower Silesia. LG Energy Solution Wroclaw, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of batteries for electric cars, is the primary founder of the laboratory’s equipment base.

The opening ceremony of the Electromobility Laboratory began at 11 o’clock at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Wroclaw University of Technology, located at Janiszewskiego 8. In his opening speech, Vice-Rector for the development of the Technical University of Wroclaw, Prof. Tomasz Nowakowski, said:

– We are committed to creating a multi-faculty European university. (.) We educate students in more than 50 fields of study. From the classical direction, such as mechanics and machine building, to the modern direction, such as electromobility. I think that the possibility of using a modern laboratory will significantly increase the quality of education and enable a number of valuable research works. – prof. Nowakowski encouraged students present in the hall during his speech.

Poland is one of the most important partners of Korea in Europe

– Poland is one of South Korea’s most important partners in Europe; we have been strategic partners since 2013. Our cooperation concerns such strategic areas as: industry, energy or infrastructure. – said Shik Kim, Counsellor at the Embassy of South Korea in Poland. – I am very pleased, that LG Energy Solution Wroclaw has made another step, strengthening cooperation with Wroclaw University of Technology. I hope that from now on the cooperation between the company and the university will be even better. – added.

LG Energy Solution Wroclaw is the main founder of specialized equipment in the Electromobility Laboratory. The company supported the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in creating laboratory space with an amount of over 600,000 zlotys. The framework agreement, signed in 2021 between the Wroclaw company and the LG Energy Solution Wroclaw University of Technology, stems from the new course of study Electromobility launched in the academic year 2021/2022 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Wroclaw University of Technology. There are currently 222 students in the field.

– Sustainable development is a society, a university and the whole environment. At LG Energy Solution Wroclaw we are changing the world with our batteries. Our next mission is to build electromobility together with the Wroclaw authorities and the academic community. Today’s opening of the Electromobility Laboratory is a symbol of collective work on sustainable development. – said during his speech Yong Girl Lee, Director of External Relations at LG Energy Solution Wroclaw. – I am very grateful and thank you for creating the opportunity to build the space of the Electromobility Laboratory here. – addressed Yong Girl Lee to representatives of the Technical University of Wroclaw.

LG Energy Solution Wroclaw actively supports young generations, cooperating with nationwide universities and supporting the technical secondary schools. The manufacturer of batteries for electric cars from Biskupic Podgorne near Wroclaw is one of the leading investors in the region and a representative of the largest employers in Lower Silesia. In 2023, the “Charge The Future” internship program addressed to students of Polish universities was launched. As part of a 3-month paid internship, students under the supervision of an experienced employee of LG Energy Solution Wroclaw can take their first steps on the labor market and pass student internships.

– Immediately after starting this course, LG Energy Solution came to us; a cooperation agreement was signed, including conducting classes, internships and support in the construction of a new laboratory – said prof. Waldemar Rebizant, dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Wroclaw University of Technology.

Unique Laboratory at Wroclaw University of Technology

After the official part in the Conference Hall, guests were invited to the Laboratory space on the V floor, where a ceremonial ribbon cutting took place, in which representatives of the Wroclaw University of Technology took part, local authorities and LG Energy Solution Wroclaw. The Electromobility Laboratory consists of 5 research stations. Thanks to the support of the company, the new laboratory includes control stations for various types of electric drives with all modern motors used in electromobility. Importantly, students will also have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art solutions, designed for scientific staff, for the rapid prototyping of control systems.

– In our laboratory, we can determine the individual stages of energy processing. A unique solution are stands equipped with rapid prototyping systems, thanks to which students can design their own control structures for alternating and direct current motors in various configurations. This is a thing at Polish universities so far unprecedented – said dr. Maciej Skowron from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, laboratory manager. – In other positions, we can analyze the impact of battery cooperation with drive systems and the way they interact – explained Mr Skowron.

Ecobike also proved its support in creating the e-lab, which donated 2 electric bikes for this purpose.

Advanced lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles

LG Energy Solution is a global leader providing advanced lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), IT products and power tools, and for energy storage systems (ESSs). With its global network, LG Energy Solution is more involved than ever in developing innovative technologies that bring us closer to the future. The greenfield investment in Wroclaw resulted in the introduction of the most modern technology to Poland, as well as making our country a European leader in this industry. The plant covering an area of about 100 hectares has dozens of modern production lines. The current production capacity is 70 GWh.

In addition to the intersection of the symbolic ribbon and the invitation to the newly opened laboratory space, the agenda of the event also included lectures conducted by university employees. Dr. Weronika Urbanska delivered a lecture „In search of raw materials – terrestrial ways to acquire space resources”, dr hab. inc. Grzegorz Tarchala, prof. The university talked about „Electronic energy processing”, and an expert from LG Energy Solution Wroclaw, Marcin Stasko gave a lecture „Big Bang Factory: what brought new technologies and industry together, so about smart factory”. Guests and university students could also participate in races featuring remote-controlled electric cars. Among the event’s exhibitors were representatives of scientific circles who discussed their activities and research.
