46inEU

Deploying innovative net-zero technologies for climate neutrality

Powering the Future: 46 Cylinders,
Infinite Possibilities in Europe

Project Factsheet

The project “46inEU” aims to advance electric vehicle (EV) battery technology with next-generation 46- series (46mm diameter cylindrical battery cells) . The project’s main objective is to produce high-energy batteries at scale, with an annual output of about 90 mil. cells (~ 12 GWh), enabling the rapid adoption of longer driving range and faster charging electric vehicles. Key advantages of the 46-series compared to the 21-series include higher energy density, charging time under 15 minutes, and improved safety. The battery cells for EVs will be able to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to Internal Combustion Vehicles (ICVs) by 77.68%, representing a substantial reduction in climate impact for the battery manufacturing sector.

“46inEU” introduces a highly innovative approach in the manufacturing processes. This approach includes new cell design and welding technology, which improves electrical conductivity, thermal | management and structural integrity. The 46-series x will have five times the capacity of the 21-series. At the core of this advancement is the use of NCMA (Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese-Aluminium) cathode chemistry and high-efficiency silicon anodes. Higher energy density, fast charging, and higher power will enable a longer battery life. Over the first ten years of operation, the project is expected to avoid 20,611,980 tonnes of CO2 emissions, equivalent to the annual emissions of around four million passenger Cars.

The project will make a tangible contribution to the decarbonization of the transport sector, by enabling cleaner and more efficient electrification of transport and energy systems — key pillars of the European Green Deal and the EU climate policy objectives. By accelerating the decarbonisation of mobility and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the project contributes to the EU’s goal of climate neutrality by 2050. By advancing battery technology and scaling up sustainable manufacturing in Europe, 46inEU will strengthen the EU’s industrial resilience and strategic autonomy. It will promote local production, reduce import dependency and reinforce Europe’s position in the battery value chain. The project will foster innovation, attract investment, and create high-value jobs. It also supports the objectives of the Net-Zero Industry Act by scaling up clean tech manufacturing in Europe.

Located at the Wrocław Gigafactory in Poland, the project will have a significant impact on the local and regional economy. It will create over 750 new jobs, foster upskilling and knowledge transfer, and stimulate the development of business clusters and value chains in the region. By collaborating with local research and supply chain communities, 46inEU will add value to the regional economy and enhance the resilience of the EU’s industrial base. The project’s scalable design and replicability potential will enable further deployment of battery manufacturing across Europe, driving efficiency gains, cost reductions, and broader adoption of sustainable mobility solutions.
